Blue and White, Now with Red:
Gilas Pilipinas U18 invites Baterbonia
by: Denzel Caliao
In a country where basketball is more than a sport, Rene Clert Baterbonia’s journey seems like a dream that’s too good to be true—but this time it is real, raw, and starting. From wearing blue and white jerseys for Ateneo to green for the regions, his basketball paces looked surreal as it appears that he skipped a lot of ladders to climb to the top; however, those missing steps are the story of his breakthrough.
The underdog was first discovered during Palaro 2025 wherein he clinched the MVP title, opening the limelight for Baterbonia. After that he once again showed his impeccable skills in ASEAN Games, November of last year where he contributed to the 90-86 tally against Malaysia. His recent achievement is DAVRAA, making him and his team represent region 11 for the upcoming Palaro 2026. These major events marked not just his career but history for the country.
Some may stop at their peak but for the star player—he is just starting. His presence says: he is not yet done as a call tapped him.
Recruitment into Gilas Pilipinas—the dream for countless Filipino athletes—arrived earlier than expected. For many, it would be overwhelming. For Baterbonia, it’s simply the next chapter. Which now he will represent not just a region but the Philippines.
In a basketball nation always searching for its next icon, Rene Clert Baterbonia represents something refreshing. Not just a star in the making, but a symbol of how quickly the game is evolving—where young athletes are no longer just future assets, but present-day answers.
And maybe that’s the real story here.
Not that he made it early.
But that “early” might just be right on time.
The right time to wear blue, white, and red together.
