IBA, ADDU, UM, and UMTC advance to Quarterfinals in LYR CUP 2022

After four days of competition of the elimination round in Conference 2 at the LYR Cup 2022, four teams emerged on top of their conference and moved on to the Quarterfinal Round of this year’s Mindanao Collegiate Championship. They are the IBA College of Mindanao, Ateneo de Davao University, University of Mindanao-Tagum College, and the University of Mindanao.

Eight teams participated in Conference 2 of the tournament and they were divided into two groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Quarterfinal Round. In Group C, they were composed of South East Asian Institute of Technology (SEAIT), Philippine Women’s College of Davao (PWC), Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), and IBA College of Mindanao (IBA). While in Group D, they were composed of University of Mindanao-Penaplata College (UMPEN), Davao Oriental State University (DORSU), University of Mindanao (UM DAVAO), and University of Mindanao-Tagum College (UMTC).

Group C’s IBA and ADDU advance to the Quarterfinals

In Group C, the IBA College of Mindanao clinched the number 1 spot after bagging a 3-0 win-loss record while the Ateneo de Davao University clinched the number 2 spot with a 2-1 win-loss record.

IBA edged out and won over ADDU in their opening match, 86-84, also won against SEAIT, 81-68, and had a blowout victory versus PWC, 100-70. While the number 2 seed, ADDU, had a close loss against IBA, then had two straight victories to end their elimination round, defeating PWC, 88-78, and SEAIT, 98-79.

During Group C action, both IBA and ADDU are excellent offensive teams, with IBA averaging 89 points per game while ADDU averaging 90.7 points per game. But IBA had a better rebounding average of 34.7 per game, shared the ball better with an average of 29.3 assists per game, grabbed more steals with 16.3 steals per game. Meanwhile, ADDU relied on their offensive efficiency as they shot 45.7% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc, and also holding opponents to an average of 17% from three-point range.

Group D’s UMTC and UM earn their Quarterfinal slots

In Group D, the University of Mindanao-Tagum College (UMTC) breezed through the elimination round with a 3-0 win-loss card, as they blew out and won over UMPEN (146-57), edged out over DORSU (107-98), and bagged another victory over UM DAVAO (104-88). While UM DAVAO clinched their number 2 spot, as they won two straight wins over DORSU (90-81) and UMPEN (110-80).

UMTC were a potent offensive team during Group D action as they averaged around 119 points per game while shooting on average of 49% from the field. They also moved the ball well as they averaged 33 assists per game. They were also a great rebounding team as they averaged 46.3 rebounds per game.
